Washington, Jun 22 - WASHINGTON -- Congressman Randy "Duke" Cunningham (R-San Diego) today hailed the passage of his legislation, the Flag Protection Amendment (H.J.Res. 10). H.J.Res. 10 passed the House of Representatives with bipartisan support 286-130.

The Flag Protection Amendment would amend the Constitution to allow Congress to pass a law prohibiting the desecration of the American flag. This amendment will return to the American people the right to protect the flag from physical desecration and disgrace. The enactment of the flag protection amendment has been a grassroots effort led by the American Legion and the Citizens Flag Alliance (CFA), as well as 146 other citizen organizations, and has continued to be a priority for Congress.

"The passage of this legislation today is a victory for every American. The flag has been a bond that has held us together, providing each of us with a sense of common purpose and enabling us to endure when our freedoms were threatened," said Congressman Cunningham. "The American flag is the ultimate symbol of freedom, equal opportunity and religious tolerance."

"All 50 states have passed resolutions encouraging the federal government to address this problem. It is time we adhere to the will of the people and protect our flag from desecration," Cunningham added.
