Cunningham Announces Passage of War Supplemental
Cunningham Announces Passage of War Supplemental

6/15/2004- Duke promotes Men's Health Week in Washington

Washington, May 5 - WASHINGTON -- Congressman Randy "Duke" Cunningham (R-San Diego) today announced the passage of the Emergency Supplemental Appropriations Act for Defense, the Global War on Terror, and Tsunami Relief Act of FY 2005 (H.R. 1268). The War Supplemental will provide US troops necessary resources to capture more insurgents such as key al-Qaeda leader Abu Faraj al-Libbi, increased funding for border patrol agents, and border security improvement.

Along with funding for defense related expenditures, the Supplemental increases the Death Benefit and Gratuity for families of our fallen heroes from $12,000 to $100,000, and the maximum life insurance benefits will increase from $250,000 to $400,000.

Critical provisions from the REAL ID Act were also included in the bill. H.R 1268 provides funding for increased border security and enforcement. This includes resources to hire, train, equip and support an additional 500 Border Patrol Agents. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will also receive funding to hire and train additional criminal investigators and ICE agents. This legislation will implement much needed drivers license reforms and require applicants to provide proof they are in the country legally. It also authorizes the completion of the San Diego border security fence after years of delayed construction due to environmental concerns.

"Today, I joined my colleagues in supporting legislation that will improve national security, and provides necessary resources for our troops overseas and the families of fallen soldiers. It also includes funding for our allies and security development around the globe," stated Congressman Cunningham.

"This legislation will finally close the 3.5 mile gap in the border fence that has been left unfinished for the majority of the last decade. The San Diego border is one of the most trafficked corridors for entry by illegal aliens. The hard work to stop this problem is paying off. The bottom line is that we need to put homeland security first, and the War Supplemental helps us achieve this goal," he added.
